August

August

In August, Joe Shlichta constructs a dense landscape from interlocking fields of color. Greens move from deep forest tones to sharp yellow-green, joined by passages of ochre, coral, gray, and blue. Trees, foliage, water, and distant forms remain identifiable while being broken into irregular planes.

The painting is developed through relationships between adjacent colors and shapes, with shifts in value and temperature establishing depth. Shlichta’s remembered landscape emerges through the accumulated structure of the painting rather than from direct observation.

Oil on canvas.
