Sarah Norsworthy
Sarah Norsworthy is a Seattle-based painter whose richly layered landscapes capture the fleeting atmosphere of lived experience through dense impasto, luminous color, and acute observations of light. Working across painting, drawing, fiber arts, and sculptural installation, Norsworthy creates works that move fluidly between wilderness and the familiar edges of domestic life—shorelines, wooded paths, parks, backyards, and transitional spaces encountered in everyday life. Her paintings function as emotional after-images: intimate reflections shaped by memory, movement, and sustained attention to place.
Through expressive surface, tactile brushwork, and nuanced color relationships, Norsworthy evokes both the physical and psychological experience of landscape. Her compositions balance observation with abstraction, allowing forms to emerge and dissolve through accumulated layers of paint. Whether depicting the vastness of the natural environment or quieter moments closer to home, her work reflects an enduring interest in how landscape becomes intertwined with personal history and emotional resonance.
Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Norsworthy earned her BA in Studio Art from Dartmouth College and her MFA in Painting and Drawing from the University of Washington. She has also worked extensively in drawing, fiber arts, and sculptural environments, and is a founding member of the nonprofit Art for All. She lives and works in Seattle, where she continues to teach drawing and painting alongside her studio practice.
